How We Tested
Our 2026 Firestick test used a Fire TV Stick 4K Max (the current flagship model) connected to a 1 Gbps fiber line in the United States. For each VPN, we installed the provider's official Fire TV app from the Amazon Appstore — except where noted — and ran the following tests:
- Speed test: Connected to nearest server, ran 5 consecutive speed tests via the Fast.com app on the Fire TV, averaged the results.
- 4K streaming test: Loaded Netflix 4K, Disney+ 4K, and Prime Video 4K content and verified sustained playback without buffering for 30+ minutes.
- Unblocking test: Attempted to access Netflix US/UK/JP, Disney+, HBO Max, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Prime Video, and Apple TV+ from a US IP, then from a UK IP, then from a Japanese IP.
- App experience test: Measured app launch time, server switching time, and how well the UI handled the Fire TV remote's directional pad.
- Sideload test (where applicable): For providers without native Fire TV apps, we sideloaded the Android TV APK via Downloader and verified the app worked correctly.
We tested each provider over a two-week period in April-May 2026, including peak streaming hours (8-11 PM local time). Speeds reported in the table below are averages across all test runs.

How to Set Up a VPN on Firestick
All five of our recommended VPNs are easy to install on a Fire TV Stick 4K Max. The process takes under five minutes and does not require jailbreaking the device.
Step 1: Subscribe to a VPN. Sign up on the provider's website using your computer or phone. Most providers accept credit cards, PayPal, and cryptocurrency. For maximum privacy, some users prefer paying with Bitcoin or even cash (Mullvad accepts cash in an envelope).
Step 2: Search for the VPN app on your Firestick. From the Firestick home screen, navigate to the search icon (magnifying glass) and type the VPN provider's name. The official app will appear in the Amazon Appstore results. Select it and click "Get" or "Download."
Step 3: Log in. Open the installed app and enter the credentials you created during signup. Most providers also support QR-code login from a phone, which is faster than typing an email and password with the Firestick remote.
Step 4: Connect to a server. Select a server in the country whose content you want to access. For maximum speed, connect to a server geographically close to you. For unblocking specific country libraries, connect to a server in that country.
Step 5: Open your streaming app. Launch Netflix, Disney+, or whatever service you want to use. The streaming app will see the VPN server's IP address and serve the corresponding regional content library.

What About Jailbroken Firesticks?
"Jailbreaking" a Firestick (more accurately called "sideloading" or "modding") involves installing apps that Amazon does not distribute through the official Appstore. Common reasons to do this include installing Kodi with third-party add-ons, sideloading IPTV apps, or running custom streaming utilities. The practice is in a legal gray area in most countries — it does not violate any law to sideload software on a device you own, but the streaming add-ons themselves may access pirated content.
If you run a jailbroken Firestick, a VPN is especially important because:
- It hides your activity from your ISP. ISPs in many countries monitor torrent-like traffic patterns and may throttle or flag accounts with suspicious streaming behavior.
- It protects against malicious add-ons. Some Kodi add-ons and sideloaded APKs contain malware, trackers, or information-stealing code. A quality VPN with a built-in ad/malware blocker (NordVPN's Threat Protection, ProtonVPN's NetShield, Surfshark's CleanWeb) adds a layer of defense.
- It masks your IP from add-on operators. Less reputable streaming add-ons log user IPs and may share them with third parties. A VPN ensures your real IP is never exposed to the add-on operator.
For jailbroken Firestick setups, we particularly recommend IPVanish (which owns its own server infrastructure, reducing the number of parties that can potentially log your data) or NordVPN (with Threat Protection for ad/malware blocking).
Free VPNs on Firestick: What to Avoid
We strongly recommend against using free VPNs on a Firestick. The reasons are not abstract — they are practical and immediate:
- Data caps: Most free VPNs impose monthly data limits of 500MB-2GB. A single hour of 4K streaming consumes approximately 7GB. You would exhaust a free plan's data allowance in under 20 minutes of streaming.
- Speed limits: Free tiers are deliberately throttled to push users toward paid plans. In our testing, free tiers of even reputable providers (ProtonVPN Free, Windscribe Free) cap out at roughly 20-30% of paid speeds.
- Server restrictions: Free tiers usually limit you to a handful of server locations, which means unblocking specific country libraries is often impossible.
- Privacy risks: Truly free VPNs (those with no paid tier at all) make money by logging and selling user data. A VPN that costs nothing to use is not a free product — you are the product. Studies by the CSIRO and others have found that many free VPN apps contain tracking libraries, ad injection, and even malware.
- No Fire TV app: Most free VPNs do not have a native Fire TV app, forcing users to sideload the Android APK. This adds complexity and reduces reliability.
If budget is a constraint, our top budget pick Surfshark is $2.19/month on the 2-year plan — less than the cost of a single coffee per month, and a real VPN with verified no-log policy and dedicated Fire TV support. There is no good reason to use a free VPN in 2026.
